Who we are
Found in Tokyo is a Tokyo-based lost-item recovery service operated by a solo founder. You can reach us any time at hello@foundintokyo.com.
What we collect
When you submit the lost-item report form, you give us:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your phone number (optional)
- A description of the item you lost
- Where you lost it
- When you lost it
- Any additional details you choose to share
- Which service tier you want (Locate / Locate + Retrieve / + Ship)
If you chat with us through the Crisp window, we also see the messages you send. Crisp captures standard session information (IP address, approximate location, browser type) so your chat history persists across page reloads.
Proof of identity or ownership (only if the holder requires it): Japanese lost-and-found offices, stations, kōban, and hotels sometimes require the owner to show ID or proof of ownership before releasing an item. What they ask for varies by holder — it could be a photo of a government-issued ID, a photo of the item, a serial number, a receipt, or a matching description of contents. When this comes up, we'll ask you to share only what that specific holder requires. We forward it to the holder, keep a copy in the case record only for as long as the case is open, and delete it when the case closes.
Why we collect it
To locate and return your item. When we contact Japanese lost-and-found offices, kōban, transit operators, hotels, and couriers on your behalf, we share the minimum information needed — typically the item description, the location, and the date. We do not share your personal contact details with third parties unless you ask us to put you directly in touch.
Third parties
We use three third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy:
- Netlify Forms — an independent backup of your form submission so leads aren't lost if our chat is down. Netlify privacy policy.
- Crisp — live chat. Crisp privacy policy.
- Stripe — payment, via Stripe Payment Link. We never see your card number; Stripe processes payment and sends us only the transaction record. Stripe privacy policy.
We do not use Google Analytics or any third-party tracking. We do not sell or share your data for advertising.
Cookies
We don't set tracking cookies. Crisp sets a functional session cookie so your chat history persists if you reload the page. If you disable cookies, chat will still work but won't remember you between visits.
How long we keep your data
Form submissions and chat transcripts are kept for 12 months after your case is closed, then deleted. Payment records are retained for 7 years to comply with Japanese tax-filing requirements.
